What is IFS?

We are a system of protective and wounded inner parts led by a core Self. We come to therapy to “get rid” of a problematic symptom, but it is the “getting rid of” agenda that causes the distress.

When we stop running, avoiding, pushing down, pushing away, numbing, and get curious, these symptoms, or parts, no longer need to scream to get our attention.

Building relationships on the inside brings healing to wounded parts and the emergence of Self-energy: confidence, calm, compassion, courage, creativity, clarity, curiosity, and connectedness.

Sessions are somatic. This means we focus on the body, sensations, emotions, images, and thoughts.

Sessions are experiential. This means we direct curiosity and attention inward. It can feel meditative. At the end of a session, one may feel a deep sense of gratitude and inner coherence.

A recent study published by the American Psychological Association (APA) shows empirical evidence that IFS offers an evidence-based approach to treating PTSD. See the full article by clicking this link.
